Sobre la base de más de diez años de investigaciones intensivas, incluidas entrevistas en profundidad y observaciones en los hogares, los autores -tres psiquiatras y un antropólogo cultural- utilizan la teoría de tos sistemas familiares para trazar el curso del desarrollo del alcoholismo en las familias. Ponen en tela de juicio muchas ideas vigentes en general, y muestran, por ejemplo que la identidad alcohólica de una familia la mantiene unida con tanta frecuencia, como la disgrega, y que las familias en las cuales el alcoholismo no invade las rutinas y los rituales no tienden a transmitir su identidad alcohólica a sus hijos. En la última sección, los autores describen un modelo de terapia familiar para el tratamiento del alcoholismo con una perspectiva de desarrollo. Su libro constituye un aporte de vital importancia para la bibliografía sobre el alcoholismo y la familia.
